Generational differences in the work place Essay As a productive member of society and a member of the work force, noticing a generational difference in the workplace is not uncommon. In my experience working a regular nine to five and also owning my own business, I have encountered this matter. It could be said that these last four generations have experienced a great amount of adversity, progression, and hard times. It could be said that even though we are speaking about people from different generations, the similarities in the history and occurrences can be seen. Whether it is living through a depression, experiencing a war, or witnessing technological advancements; there is a common ground. The reason for looking at this issue through this open mindset is to be able to properly manage the many variables that can occur within the workplace. Being able to view the issues from a broad spectrum of knowledge and experience can help build a productive and satisfying environment. In reviewing the information provided to us in this matter, it is easy to see where the gaps of differences can occur. One of the first things that should be reviewed and examined is what the generations consider to be the definition of work. The older generations seem very narrow minded and simple with what consists and is expected from their work. It seems that the focus in traditionalist and baby boomers was hard work and climbing the corporate ladder. For the next two generations, the x and y, we notice that a balance between work and life is becoming an important factor. Second issue that should be looked at is the way these generations look at authority and their meaning of leadership. The older generations believe in those that have seniority and tenure, leaving their expectations to time and experience. They also believe in a hierarchy of power and believe in the style of control and command. The younger generations have a need for answers. They look at authority as questionable and at their same level. Even though they understand that there must be leadership, they may just come to them for guidance and some direction. Lastly, the greatest tool and possibly most important thing to look at is communication. This could mean from how people communicate verbally, physically, manner and even the tools used. The older generations seemed to be discreet, formal and respectful when communicating. They communicate one-on-one and more deal more on an individual level. The following generation seemed to be involved in meetings and focus on issues as team players. They also prefer to be diplomatic, speak open, and practically anytime. The newer generations seem to communicate by being direct and blunt. They also start to use technology as a means to communicate anytime and as frequent as possible. Their communication seems to be more positive and intellectual, with a broader an open mind. The point of reviewing these details in regards to the style of work produced by these generations is to better help management. Each individual will perform on the basis of what they know. Accordingly, they will also notice the way each other acts and performs. As a manager you need to be able to take the weakness and the strengths of each player and properly distribute the work flow. Older generations seem to work hard, respond to authority but communicate less frequent. It might be in the best interest to put them in a position of single focused tasks. Something that you can depend on them to get done and not need much help with. The younger generations seem to question authority but seek guidance, and communicate frequently. It would be best to put them in a position where they can be creative, multi task and feel like they are positive team player. Management must focus on similarities that evolve from the generations. Be aware that change will happen due to the variables of work ethic and even knowledge and comfort with technology. Each generation has a different view on rewards for working, so properly translating that to your team may need to be seen on a case by case and individual basis. A manager must avoid generalizing and stereotyping the people they must be productive with. Being open minded, knowledgeable about your workers and their history, will bring the team closer, the company better and overall produce productive results.

Oriental Art Oriental art is very distinct from other parts of the world. In their sculptures they still used such materials as clay, wood, and bronzes. However their art work promoted such things as goodness in nature, serenity, graceful balance, spiritual perfection, and a mystical harmony within themselves. There work avoided confusion, conflict and violent emotions at all costs. New or unprecedented experiments in their art work was never welcomed, and the expression of nobility and inner worth where demanded. Ultimately oriental art was said to be â€Å"a way of being†, but to understand this you must look at the words of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius who said â€Å"Raise yourself to the beautiful.† However not all Oriental art is the same, and to see the difference and the influences of their art you need to look at the area’s of China, Japan, and Korea. The Neolithic inhabitants of China were energetic in their pottery, and where the first to practice this art, in which China has remained supreme in until recent times. Not very much is known about the earliest Chinese craftsman or the society that produced them, other than the fact that they lived in pounded earth settlements in northern Honan, Shangtung, and Kansu. These early craftsman created fine pottery, and especially beautiful vessels for funerals which where used for food and other provisions for the dead. Foundation of Human Service Essay

1. Identify the four themes of human services. According to the reading assignment Chapter One of Introduction to Human Services, the four themes are: 1. Concerns with problems in living- This is when people unable meet their own basic needs. 2. The increase in problems in our modern world – This include having a growing number of people feeling estranged from their communities or not having the support needed from friends or family when there a joyous times and times of sorrow. 3. The need for self-sufficiency – This is where to rely on others to meet their basic needs, it is destroying to their self-esteem. This creates a makes them feel they are incapable of doing for themselves. 4. The goals of social care, social control, and rehabilitation – social care is when a person cannot provide for themselves, social control when a person is able to care for themselves but not well enough or according to the law. Rehabilitation this is when a person is not currently able to care for him or herself as if they were prior, possibly because of an accident or crisis. It can be short term or long term but the hope it to get the individual to be able to care for his or herself. (Woodside & McClam, 2012) 2. Identify professional disciplines that influence human services. The disciplines listed in the reading assignment Chapter One of Introduction to Human Services 1. Sociology – helps human service professionals understand the foundations of life that affect our existence, such as a family’s organization, the roles that each family member places, race, gender, even poverty. 2. Psychology – is your behaviors are looked very closely along with how your mind works. They look at how you react to certain things and why you react the way you do. 3. Anthropology – studies the cultural, physical, and social development of humans and the variation in their customs and beliefs. (Woodside & McClam, 2012) 3. How have societal viewpoints concerning mental illness or health influenced human services over the past three centuries? I feel that over the last three centuries societal viewpoint has changed how things are categorized which leads to how we deal with things. In the past some of the categories were, child, abled-person, and not abled-person. This does not help when it comes to helping people with different illnesses or the poor. I feel that if we have such a wide categorizing system then there is less help. When we break things down then it gives you the opportunity to provide better help. 4. How have societal viewpoints concerning child welfare influenced human services over the past three centuries? I feel that over the last three centuries societal viewpoint has changed child welfare for the better. Our children now get more help than what they did in the past. Now children are treated equal amongst society than before. We now have people in place that can help a child and our child know they will get help. Now children are not just dismissed when they are having problems. 5. How have societal viewpoints concerning incarceration and probation influenced human services over the past three centuries? I feel that now incarceration and probation is becoming something that is look at closely in the past I felt that people got away with things because they â€Å"knew someone.† Now we have employed people to make sure they are following the rules of society and this helps our communities out. We now have a better handle on things than we did in the past. 6. Explain how political and legislative changes have affected client care. Now that we do not treat the mentally ill as if they have a demon inside then and we have the politician and legislature to set law to help then we are a lot better off.
